Ausklang einer Reise. / The last days of a journey · 31. Oktober 2007

New York, das Ziel meiner Reise, habe ich also erreicht. Reisen macht muede, desshalb entschliesse ich mich noch ein wenig Urlaub zu machen (grins). Mein “Basecamp” ist die Horesetalefarm in Connecticut, 2 Stunden noerdlich von New York City. Das gibt mir Gelegenheit noch ein paar Dinge zu sehen.

New York City, the destination of my journey. O.k. I am there, what now? Travelling makes you tired, thus I deside to take some vacation (smile). My “basecamp” is the Horsetalefarm in Connecticut, 2 hours north of New York City. This gives me the chance to visit some more interesting sites.

Zuerst fahre ich nach Boston./ First I go to Boston.

Hier uebernachte ich bei Ruth und Georg, den Eltern von Chris den ich in Sturgis traf. /
Here I sleep at Ruth and Georgs house close to Boston. They are the parents of Chris who I met in Sturgis. Dear Ruth, dear Georg thank you very much for your hospitality.

Und besuche die Harvard Universitaet. Einer der Top Bildungsschmieden der USA / And visit the Harvard University one of the top addresses for studying in USA.

Der Gruender. / The founder.

Dann die Fregatte USS Constitution von 1797. Im Jahre 1812 versenkte sie, als erstes Schiff der USA, ein britisches Kampfschiff. Die Kanonenkugeln des britischen Schiffes prallten wirkungslos von den Eichenplanken der USS Constitution ab, was ihr den Spitzname “Old Ironsides” einbrachte. Das Schiff wird noch heute, zu besonderen Anslaessen, gesegelt.

Then the fregatt USS Constitution from 1797. In the year 1812 she beated, as the first US ship, a british battleship. The canon balls from the British ship bounced off the sides of her, without major damage. That brought her the nickname “Old Ironsides”. The ship is still sailed today to special occasions.

Da ich fuer die Kueche zustaendig bin, fahre ich oft zu dem Gemuesestand eines Farmers. Der Herbst ist bereits angebrochen, hier ein paar Impressionen. /
Because I am responsoible for the kitchen I often visit a farm stand close by. Fall has started already here some impressions.

Halloween steht vor der Tuer. / Halloween is coming up.

An einem schoenen Wochenende besuche ich, mit Karina und Freunden, Westpoint, die Eliteausbildungsstaette der US Army. Wer hier abschliesst gehoert zu der absoluten Elite des Landes und bekommt praktisch jeden Job. Westpoint bedeutet 4 Jahre haertester Drill und hartes Studium. Ausserdem verzicht auf persoenliche Freiheit, d.h. zum Beispiel keinen Freund oder Freundin und alles was dazugehoert (zumindest offiziell)! Au weia!/
On a nice weekend I am visiting, together with Karina and friends, Westpoint, the most famos and hardest training school for the US- Army. Who graduates here belongs to the absolute elite of the country and can get almost every job. Westpoint means 4 years hard drill and studying. On top of that, almost complete abandonment of personel freedom. For example no girlfriend or boyfriend and everything related to this subject (at least officially). Oh boy!

Der Indian Summer ist angebrochen und unbeschreiblich schoen. Wir machen einen Spaziergang durch den farbenfrohen Wald. /
The Indian Summer is there and undiscribable beautiful. We go for a hike to see all the colors.

Schliesslich erreiche ich den Flughafen in Toronto, 2 Tage vor Abflug, um mein Moped einzuchecken. /
I finally reach Toronto Airport, 2 days before the flight, to check in my bike.

Fertig fuer die Verschiffung. Das Bike fliegt im gleichen Flieger mit wie ich. Das heisst, ich kann von Muenchen aus mit dem Motorrad nach Hause fahren. Das ist doch mal gediegen. /
Ready to fly. The bike is flying in the same plane as I do. So I can ride home from Munich on my own bike. Cool!

In Toronto checke ich in der Jugendherberge ein und, man mag es kaum glauben ende als Fruehstueckskoch. Die Kuechencrew ist ausgefallen, der Hostelmanager mit den Nerven am Ende, da er den hungrigen Gaesten kein Fruehstueck bieten kann. Ich biete an zu uebernehmen. Gesagt, getan und schon brutzle ich Omletts, Eier mit fettem Speck und Wuerstchen, serviere Muesli mit Joghurt und Fruechten. Im Gegenzug muss ich nichts fuer die Nacht bezahlen. Prima! Hat richtig Spass gemacht und die Gaeste waren zufrieden. /
In Toronto I check into the HI- Hostel and believe it or not end up as breakfast chef. The kitchencrew did not show up and the hostel manager is driving crazy, because there is no breakfast today for the guests. I tell him that I could take over. All right, all of the sudden I am making omletts, fry eggs with bacon and serve granola with yoghurt and fruits. In exchange I don’t have to pay the night. Great! It was big fun for me and the guests were happy.

Und hier sitze ich nun am Flughafen in Toronto, warte auf meinen Flieger und schreibe den letzten Reisebericht. Wie ich mich fuehle? Im Moment noch normal. Das ging mal wieder alles viel zu schnell. Kaum zu glauben, dass das Jahr jetzt um ist. Wo ist nur die Zeit geblieben? Ich muss das alles erstmal verdauen, ausserdem bin ich ja auch noch nicht zu Hause. Ich habe ja noch eine kleine Fahrt vor mir. Mein Schlusswort kommt in den naechsten Tagen. Viele Gruesse an Euch alle.

And now I sit here at the airport in Toronto, wait for my flight and write the last article of the journey. How I feel? Still o.k. It was all so fast in the last couple of days. The time flew by like nothing. I have to digest all that first and also I am not home yet. I still have a little ride left. My final word will be published in the next days.

Schlusswort USA: Das ist wirklich schwierig und auf der anderen Seite auch wieder ueberhaupt nicht. USA ist ein gigantisches Land in jedem Sinne. Das Land ist so gross und vielseitig, die Menschen unglaublich nett und Kontaktfreudig. Eine besonders gute Eigenschaft der Amerikaner; man bekommt sehr viel Vertrauensvorschuss. Ich wurde in soviele Haeuser eingeladen sogar wenn die Menschen garnicht da waren. Typischer Satz:” Die Tuer ist offen, geh einfach rein und machs Dir bequem.” Der Hammer! USA ist ein Land der Superlative. USA kann man nicht in 2 Saetze packen, da es vorallem das ist, was man daraus macht und was man darin sehen moechte. Fahrt hin, seht und entscheidet selbst. Jeder findet sein Amerika, ob gut oder schlecht. Es kommt sehr auf die Einstellung an. Ich kann nur fuer mich sagen, ich bin ein grosser Fan der USA.

Final word USA: That is difficult and on the other hand very easy. USA is a gigantic country by any means. The country is so big and divers, the people so friendly and open. A very positv character of the Americans is that they give you lot’s of trust upfront. I was invited into so many houses often the people weren’t even there. A typical phrase:” The door is open, just go in and make yourself at home.” Incredible! USA is a land of superlatives you can not describe it in two sentenses. It manly is what you want to see in it. Everybody will find his America whether good or bad. Go, see yourself and decide. It depends a lot on your attitude. I can only say for my part, I am a big fan of the USA.

Mission erfuellt! / Mission accomplished · 28. September 2007

New York City, das Ziel meiner Reise.
Jahrelang habe ich davon getraeumt, einmal, mit dem Motorrad, von Patagonien bis nach New York City zu fahren. Lange fehlten mir das Geld, und die Zeit dafuer. Aber irgendwann war es soweit. Ich entschied mich, meinen Wunsch Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen und nahm mir die Zeit (Der eigentlich schwierigste Schritt des ganzen Unternehmens).
Am 1 November 2006 machten Kristina und ich uns auf nach Buenos Aires, die Hauptstadt Argentiniens. Am 6 November bekamen wir das Motorrad aus dem Zoll, am 8 November ging die Motorradreise tatsaechlich los. New York war zu diesem Zeitpunkt und auch staendig waehrend der Reise, verdammt weit weg. Auch war es irgendwie schwer vorstellbar, dass wir tatsächlich einmal die Stadt vor Augen haben würden.
Nach 10 Monaten und 43940 Kilometern ist es dann tatsächlich soweit. Ich rolle, leider ohne Kristina, in New York City ein.
Ein merkwuerdiges Gefuehl. Unfassbar dass ich jetzt tatsaechlich da bin. Freude, ein Grinsen in meinem Gesicht, einfach unglaublich. Ein Gefuehl des Bedauerns, da die Reise sich jetzt ihrem Ende neigt, habe ich noch nicht. Dafuer ist das alles einfach zu unwirklich. Wenn ich mir die zurueckgelegte Strecke auf einem Globus anschaue, ist es noch viel unwirklicher. Und dabei war das alles gar nicht so schwierig. Aber hier erstmal die Bilder von New York.

New York City, the target of my journey.
For many years I have dreamed of riding, one time in my life, from Patagonia to New York City. For a long time, I was lacking the money and the time for this project. But one day it was time. I decided to do it and I took the time off (The most difficult part of the whole adventure.)
On November 1st, 2006 Kristina and I set out to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. On November 6th we got the bike out of customs and at the 8th of November we really hit the road. New York, at this stage and also the whole time during the journey, was very, very far away. It also was very difficult to imagine seeing the city in person one day.
After 10 months and 43940 kilometers it was done. I roll, unfortunately without Kristina, into New York City. A strange feeling. I cannot believe that I am really here. I have a sense of delight, a smile in my face. Even though New York means the end of my trip I do not have a feeling of sadness yet. All this is just too unreal. When I look up the track on a globe, it is even more unreal. Besides all that it was easier than I thought. But here now the pictures of my time in New York.

More than 40.000 Kilometer, mainly two up, through thick and thin without a breakdown. What else can I say?

Jetzt erstmal ein Eis. In New York ist irgendwie jeder Auslaender. Wir haben viel Spass mit unserem tuerkischen Eisverkaeufer. /
We were ready for an ice cream. In New York everybody seems to be a foreigner. We have lots of fun with our Turkish ice cream man.

Dann nehme ich fuer 2 Wochen Quartier bei Karina und Alex und entdecke die Stadt aufs neue. Ich war vor 10 Jahren das erste mal hier. /
I stay at Karina’s and Alex’s house for 2 weeks and explore the city once again. I was here 10 years ago for the first time.

Dann entschliesse ich mich der Statue of Liberty einen Besuch abzustatten. /

Und was gibt es zu berichten? Na der Libby geht’s gut. Sie steht hier und verichtet, mit stoischer Ruhe, ihre Arbeit. Naemlich Freiheit repraesentieren und Besucher und Einwanderer gruessen. Das macht sie wirklich prima. /
And what is there to report? Well, Libby is doing great. She is standing here and is doing here job as cool as a cucumber. Meaning, representing freedom and greeting visitors and immigrants. She is really doing a fine job.

Ellis Island
Das war lange Zeit die erste Station fuer Einwanderer nach USA, ca. 12 Millionen Menschen. Circa 100 Millionen Amerikaner haben Vorfahren die durch Ellis Island mussten. /
Was for a long time the first station for imigrants to America, about 12 million people. About 100 million Americans today can trace their ancesters back to Ellis Island.

So, das war nun meine Story von New York City. Ja und jetzt, ist jetzt alles vorbei? War ‘s das schon? Nee, noch nicht ganz. Ich werde mir noch Boston und Westpoint anschauen. Der Rueckflug ist am 30. Oktober von Toronto, Kanada aus. Das gibt mir die Gelegenheit noch die Niagarafaelle zu besuchen und Euch einen weiteren, letzten Artikel. Ausserdem werde ich noch ein Schlusswort verfassen. Das alles kommt dann Anfang November.
Also, wir sehen und hoeren uns und ich wuerde mich mal wieder ueber ein paar Kommentare von Euch freuen.

All right, that was my New York City story. And now what? All over now? That’s it? No, not yet! I will visit Boston and Westpoint, my flight back is from Toronto, Canada on October 30th. That gives me the chance to see the Niagara Falls and you another, last article. I also will write some closing words. All that will be online by the beginning of November.

Der lange Weg nach Osten. / The long way east · 11. September 2007

Nach meiner grossartigen Zeit in Sturgis ist es nun Zeit Richtung Ostkueste zu fahren. Ein langer Weg steht mir bevor. Mehr als die Haelfte des Landes gilt es zu durchqueren. Mit dem Finger auf der Karte sieht das gar nicht so schlimm aus. Naja, mit dem Finger auf der Karte eben. Vorher moechte ich aber noch eines der beruehmtesten Monumente der USA besuchen, das im Sueden South Dakotas liegt. /
After my great time in Sturgis it is time to head east, towards the east coast. A long way layes in front of me. I have to cross more than half the country. With the finger on the map it looks not that bad. Well, with the finger on the map. But before all that I want to see one of the most popular National Monuments of USA, in the south of South Dakota.

Diese Koepfe ziehen jaehrlich ca. 3 Mio. Besucher an. Mt. Rushmore wurde 1939 fertiggestellt und zeigt, von links nach rechts, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln und Theodore Roosevelt. Das Monument ist wirklich beeindruckend. /
This heads attrakt approx. 3 million visitors a year. Mt. Rushmore was finished in 1939 and shows, from left to right, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln und Theodore Roosevelt. This monument is really impressive.

Dann geht es weiter durch die Black Hills... in South Dakota zur Statue von Crazy Horse. Naja, sie ist immer noch mehr Berg als Statue. Dieses Monument befindet sich seit 1948 im Bau. Ich schaetze es sind weitere 20 Jahre bis zur Fertigstellung noetig. Man kann inzischen den Kopf sehen. Wenn die Statue einmal fertig ist, wird sie die groesste, in steingehauene Figur der Welt sein. Sie ist um ein Vielfaches groesser als Mt. Rushmore. /
Then I am continueing through the Black Hills in the south of South Dakota to see the Statue of Crazy Horse. It is actually still more a mountain than a statue. It is in work since 1948. My estimation is, that they still need another 20 years to finish it. You can already see the head. When it once will be done, it will be the biggest in stone carved sculpture in the world. It is a couple of times bigger than Mt. Rushmore.

Auf dem Weg zum Badlands National Park habe ich eine tierische Begegnung. Ich sehe Bisons. Diese Tiere haben, fuer mich, etwas ganz besonderes. Einst bevoelkerten ca 60 Mio. den Nordamerikanischen Kontinent. Dann waren sie fast ausgestorben, nun sind sie zurueck. Sie reprasentieren fuer mich ein grosses Stueck Freiheit und Frieden. Ausserdem ist es sehr beeindruckend sie “live” zu sehen, so massiv, so gross, wild und wuerdevoll.

On my way to the Badlands National Park I have an interesting encounter. I see Bisons. This animals are very special for me. Once there were about 60 million living in North America. Then they were almost extinct, but now they are back.
For me they represent a big piece of freedom and peace. Furthermore it is very impressive to see them in real, so massive, so big, wild and nobel.

Strange place, all of the sudden it changes from a savannah to this moon resambling spot.

Eindruecke / Impressions.

“Sie” im Park, nochmals ein kleines Bisschen Off road. / “She” in the park. A little bit of off road again.

Aber jetzt, nur noch Ostenkurs. Vorbei an endlosen, bis zum Horizont reichenden Mais- und Weizenfeldern. Wunderschoen./
But now, only east course. Passing endless, the horizon touching corn and wheat fields. Beautiful.

Hin und wieder ein Relikt aus frueherer Zeit. / Once in a while a relict from former times.

So vergehen die Tage, dann treffe ich Brad und Kristie auf ihrer Harley. Sie bieten mir ihren Platz zum schlafen an. Ein willkommenes Angebot nach 2 Naechten freien Campens ist es schoen wieder Gesellschaft zu haben. Vielen Dank Euch beiden.

The days passes by. Then I meet Brad and Kristie on there Harley. They offer me their place to sleep. I am very happy. After 2 days of wild camping it is nice to have some company again. Thank you very much!

Dann besuche ich, in der Naehe von Chicago, Mike. Freund von Guy und Marie, die wir in Mexiko trafen und auch begeisterter Motorradreisender. Sein Roommate Ed grillt mir ein riesen T-bone Steak, genau das richtige nach einem solchen Tag.

Then I visit, close to Chicago, Mike a friend of Guy and Marie who we met in Mexico. He also is a motorcycle traveller. His roommate Ed grills me a big T-bone steak. That’s the right stuff after a day of riding like this.

Dieses Land ist wirklich endlos. Ich hab schon Schwielen am Hintern. Nach 5 Tagen mit Tagesetappen zwischen 500 und 1000 Kilometern erreiche ich North Carolina.
/ The 5th day. After riding daily between 500 up to 1000 kilometer I have already weals on my butt. I finally reach North Carolina.

Hier besuche ich Roger, meinen frueheren Arbeitskollegen und Freund. /
Here I visit Roger my former colleague and friend.

Mein Moped verlangt ausserdem nach erneuter Zuwendung. Die Kette ist wieder hin, ausserdem braucht “Sie” frisches Oel. Ich habe Glueck und treffe Five O,.../
My bike is asking for some attention again. The chain is worn out for the second time and “She” needs fresh oil. I am lucky to get to know Five O,...

Hier die gesamte Truppe, leider hatten sie in der Zeit, in der ich hier war kein Meeting. Ich haette sie gerne alle kennengelernt. Hinten, oben im Bild ist Lil ceez, ihn traf ich zuerst, er hat mir den Kontakt vermittelt. /
Here the whole troop. It’s a pitty that there was no meeting at the time I was in town. I really would have liked to meet you all. In the very back and up you see Lil ceez. I met him first, he brought me in contact with “Five O”. Thank you for that!

Nach 2 Stunden in “Five O’s” Werkstatt ist wieder alles klar. Besten Dank!/
After 2 hours in “Five O’s” garage everything is set again. Thank you very much again!

Als naechstes moechte ich den Blue Ridge Parkway fahren. Das ist eine 750 Kilometer lange Strasse ueber die suedlichen Appalachian.
/Next is the Blue Ridge Parkway it streches 750 Kilometer along the crests of the southern Appalachians.

Meine Ausruestung braucht nach dieser langen Zeit dringend eine Auffrischung. Hier mein Zelt mit 2fach gebrochener Zeltstange. Das Dumme, ich habe nur eine Reperaturhuelse. Ich versuche die zweite Bruchstelle mit Stoecken und Tape zu schienen. Zwecklos. Irgendwie schaffe ich es trotzdem eine Nacht in diesem Zustand zu ueberstehen. /
My equipment also needs to be brushed up after this long time of travelling. Here my tent with 2 times broken pole. The worst, I only have one emergancy repair tube. I try to splint and tape the second break. Pointless. I somehow manage to sleep one night under this difficult condition.

Auf dem Weg nach Washington D.C. passiere ich zufaellig Manassas und bekomme einen ersten Eindruck vom amerikanischen Buergerkrieg zwischen den Nord,- und Suedstaaten. Manassas war einer der ersten Schlachtfelder dieser Zeit im, Juli des Jahres 1861. Vier weitere Jahre des Blutvergiessens sollten folgen. Circa 600.000 Amerikaner verloren in dieser Zeit ihr Leben. /
On my way to Washington D.C. on coincidence I pass Manassas and get a first impression of the American Civil War between the North and the South. Manassas was one of the first battlefields in this time, in July 1861. Four bloddy years should follow in which about 600.000 men lost their lives.

Nach 2 Uebernachtungen in der Hostel in D.C. geht es weiter. Ich folge den Spuren des Buergerkrieges nach Gettysburg, dem blutigsten Kampfplatz dieser Zeit. Hier treffen im July 1863 beide Armeen aufeinander und bekriegen sich 3 Tage lang. Der schlimmste Tag ist der 3 Juli 1863. Nach 2 Stunden Kanonenduell rennen 12.000 Konfoederierte (Suedstaatler) gegen die Linie der Union (Nordstaaten) an, bekannt als Pickets Charge. Dabei muessen sie 2 Kilometer ueber offenes Feld zuruecklegen und werden, als leichtes Ziel, regelrecht dahingeschlachtet. In 50 Minuten verlieren 5000 Menschen ihr Leben. Nach 3 Tagen des blutigen Gemaetzels sind ca. 23.000 Nord,- und 28.000 Suedstaatler verwundet, vermisst oder getoetet. Obwohl der Krieg noch 2 Jahre andauert, wird Gettysburg als Wendepunkt und kriegsentscheidend betrachtet. /
After 2 nights in the hostel in D.C. I go on. I follow the track of the Civil War to Gettysburg the bloodiest battlefield of the war. On July 1st 1863 both armies meet here and fight for 3 days. The worst is the 3rd of July 1863. After 2 hours of canon duel 12.000 Confederates (South) ran against the lines of the Union (North), known as Pickets Charge. They have to march about 2 Kilometers over open field and are an easy prey for the canons and muskets of the Union. After 50 minutes 5000 men have lost their lives. After 3 days of bloody fighting 23.000 Union and 28.000 Confederate soldiers are wounded, missing or dead. Even though the war is going on for 2 more years, this 3 days are seen as decisive for the outcome of the war.

Heute uebernachte ich wieder in einer sehr schoen gelegenen Jugendherberge in der Naehe von Gettysburg. /
Today I again sleep in a very nice hostel close to Gettysburg.

Am naechsten Tag fahre ich erneut nach Gettysburg zu einer Vorfuehrung die “Lebende Geschichte” genannt wird. /
The next day I go again to Gettysburg to see a presentation of “Living history”.

Durch lange Gespraeche mit den Leuten erfahre ich wie wichtig dieses Ereignis in der Geschichte der USA ist. Auch heute noch ist das ganze sehr praesent in einigen Teilen der Bevoelkerung.

Through out talks to the people I learn how important this war was in the history of the USA. Even today it is very present in some parts of the population.

So sieht es aus wenn eine ganze Batterie von 4 Kanonen zum Einsatz kommt. Die Kanonenschlaege sind unbeschreiblich laut und wir stehen in einer Wolke von Schwarzpulvernebel. /
This it looks like, when a whole battery of canons is fired. The noise is undiscribable loud and we stand in a cloud of black powder.

Dann fahre ich weiter, Richtung Norden. Ich moechte nach Falls Village. Auf dem Weg dahin schramme ich an New York City vorbei und sehe die Skyline bei Nacht. Was ein komisches Gefuehl, kann das wahr sein? Bin ich schon da? All die Zeit das Ziel so weit weg und auf einmal… Nein! Auf keinen Fall, noch nicht! Neeeeeeee, ich bin noch nicht da. Dann entscheiden wir an den Strand zu fahren. Auf dem Weg dahin finden wir mal wieder eine Kuriositaet. Seit 18 Jahren verkauft Willi hier Wiener. Was ein Leben./
We go to the beach. On our way again we find a curio. For 18 years now Willy is selling Wieners here. What a life.

Wir unternehmen einen Strandspaziergang und treffen Jim, der einen Blue fish gefangen hat. Er fragt ob wir ihn haben moechten. Na klar! Abendessen!/
We go for a walk and meet Jim. He caught a Blue fish and asks if we want to have it. Yes of corse! Dinner!

Das Ding ist verdammt schwer und wir haben ca. 4 Kilometer Rueckweg vor uns. Deshalb nach Art des Hoehlenmenschen…/
That thing is damn heavy and we have to walk for another 4 kilometers back. Therefore I choose the caveman style.
